FAQ

What is Counselling?
Counselling “offers you a safe confidential place to talk about your life and anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable.  It allows you to talk with someone who is trained to listen attentively and help you improve things.” British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Does Counselling Work For Everyone?
Recent Studies from the International Centre For Clinical Excellence showed that 80% of clients in Counselling and Therapy end up better off than those who didn’t seek help. At the beginning you may feel worse before you feel better, as you are looking at difficult issues. Most people need several sessions before they start to feel a positive change in their lives.

How To Choose A Good Private Counsellor?
This is your opportunity to choose the kind of Counsellor you want to see. It can be a difficult choice. Having a professional registration such as with the BACP is essential.  Accreditation shows that the Counsellor has gone through a more rigorous professional assessment.  Clients can check online if a Counsellor is on the BACP register at www.bacpregister.co.uk. Consider what you need and feel comfortable with.  You may wish to meet with more than one Counsellor and then decide.

The BACP suggest you may want to ask:

  • How many sessions will I have?

  • What type of therapy do you offer?

  • How much will it cost?

  • What happens if I miss a session?

  • What happens if I am on holiday?

  • Is the counselling confidential?

  • Can I contact my therapist between sessions?

  • Will you make notes during the session and what happens to these?

How Does The Service Work?
Once you have made contact I will try to respond on the same day to arrange to have a no-obligation free of charge chat by phone at a time that is convenient for you. At our initial meeting we will have the time and space to discuss what is troubling you. From that, I will make a working agreement with you.  This will concern things like confidentiality, cancelling a session, fees etc.  It will also include who to contact if you wish to make a complaint.  A counselling session lasts 1 hour or 90 mins.  They are usually weekly and the number of sessions is your choice and is dependent on your needs. For some, short or medium term therapy is helpful to feel better, whilst more complex needs may benefit from longer term therapy.

Will Anybody Need To Know I've Come To See You?
No.  You do not need to inform anybody that you have come for counselling unless you wish to.  It does not go onto your GP or medical records.

How Much Does It Cost?
1 hour sessions are £50.  90 min sessions are £70. EMDR 90 min sessions are £70.  BeWell does not offer free counselling but I am willing to discuss reduced fees for those who are unwaged or on a state pension for daytime appointments.

For further information on EMDR and Anger Management, please see Services and Fees.

Your doctor may be able to access free counselling if this is what you require.
